The game comes at an interesting time for the Assassin’s Creed franchise. Director Justin Kurzel’s Michael Fassbender-starring Assassin’s Creed movie under-performed critically and critically, upon its release last year. The film’s failings haven’t slowed down Ubisoft’s gaming output, though, and it now appears that there is an animated Assassin’s Creed series heading to Netflix. The movie may not have succeeded, but the franchise at large is still in rude health.

Early signs regarding Origins have been rather positive, too. The Origins gameplay footage from E3 looked impressive and action-packed, making the game’s October release date a hotly-anticipated one. And now, this Assassin’s Creed: Origins Gamescom trailer has offered the best preview yet of the Egyptians/Assassins blend.
Set to the brooding sounds of Leonard Cohen’s “You Want It Darker”, this trailer promises a no-holds-barred assassination adventure. There’s definitely a message in that music choice – a promise that this game will be darker, bloodier and more brutal than previous entries in the franchise. The body count in the trailer supports that musical statement of intent, with arrows flying in all directions and fists flailing aplenty.
However, you could argue that this trailer rests on its laurels a bit. Ubisoft knows that the Egyptian setting excites fans, so rather than showing any new or exciting features, they’ve stuffed this cinematic trailer with images of pyramids and pharaohs. If you took out the background dressing, would this look that different to any other Assassin’s Creed game? It might resemble one of the more brutal chapters in the ongoing story, but without the Egyptian element, there isn’t much new here.
But still, there are bound to be more promotional videos and glimpses at the game in the next couple of months. This trailer is a proof of concept more than anything else, but the next one might offer a little more insight into what makes Origins unique. You’ve got until October to decide which version of the game you want to buy – there are a lot of Collectors Editions to choose from.
